Silent Hunter – Our Classic Czech Pilsner
Foreigner Brewing began with the purpose of crafting an authentic, traditional Czech Pilsner — Silent Hunter — which has since become our staple brew. The beer is named after a forest near the village of Přeštice, where our owners’ families originate.
Craft Pilsner takes more time and effort to make than most beers. We use a traditional step mash, with a series of temperature rests, as well as a decoction mash where a portion of the mash is boiled. While this process isn’t strictly necessary with the availability of modern, well-modified malts, it makes a difference to the body and ‘breadiness’ of the resulting beer. Silent Hunter then undergoes a low temperature fermentation and long lagering time, during which the beer matures.
Silent Hunter uses imported Czech Saaz hops, giving it a clean bitterness balanced by the complex malt character. Like all of our beers it is unpasteurised and unfiltered, which makes it more demanding to store but preserves the full flavour profile. It’s hard to make, store and pour, but we think it’s well worth the result.
